Backing up your copy of GT5 – The Truth!

A while ago I posted info about a software that allows you to copy/backup PS3 games. Now a few people started saying how it was illegal and stuff so I took the post off and did a bit more research on the matter.

It turns out that it is perfectly legal to copy PS3 games if the sole intention of copying them is so that you have a back up of the game. It turns illegal as soon as you benefit from the copy of the games commercially (ie sell them). The same goes for Xbox and Wii games.

You can check your local laws but this seems to be across the board, however I’m not a lawyer and am not giving legal advice!

I have 2 PS3 consoles – I would love to play the same game on both (online) at the same time. I think having a copy could be an option, but wouldn’t I need a BD burner?

Ah yes, making a copy of the disc for backup is legal under recent U.S. law changes IIRC. But here in New Zealand, we don’t have that law the last time I checked (recently), so if you make a copy, you’re pirating it according to NZ officials. Same goes with music CD’s. We can’t *legally* copy music we own on CD’s to our MP3 players, as making that copy is deemed music piracy. Lame eh?

It is silly… seriously you have already bought and paid for it… as long as you don’t share the copied version I don’t see the problem really? I guess its to stop people spreading it… obviously we cant be trusted!

If i remember correctly, backed up copies of PS3 games can’t be played on a PS3 unless you jailbreak it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Thanks

Hi Admin, any answers on Benno’s comment? here in South-Africa everything is legal, but i dont want to waste my money and lose my guarantee when jailbreaking the PS3?
