I wanted to put in a SSD in mine, but damn they are expense. I bet the PS4 has them.

Yeah I looked at that option too, and at the moment they are far too expensive to justify putting in a PS3, certainly not enough of a speed gain to warrant the cost.

Maybe the PS4 will use SSD, the prices may fall enough by the time it is released.

Has anyone tried upgrading to a 7200RPM instead of a 5400RPM drive?  Just curious.

In January I installed this:
Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive.

I have not had any issues with any game loads  I did NOT notice any real speed increase that I was expecting.

640gb arrived and installed....  8)

Note to those who may not have done it yet, but may wish to in the future...

After two failed attempts to restore my data, both failed at 61%, I did a search on the net and found it was a common problem with various solutions... Some went as far as suggesting deleting information, games etc... However, the easiest solution worked perfectly for me.... Disconnect the PS3 from the network when backing up and restoring your data.

Sorted, PS3 now with big fat hard drive!  ;D

I've never heard of this. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for digging up an old thread...

After just 8 months, big fat hard drive epically failed last night, crashing and burning during the latest seasonals!

Got a back up , but still lost quite a bit of recent action...

Hardest thing was having to tell my 9 year old son that the PS3 is out of action for a while until I get time to sort it.

Not a happy bunny!  >:(

Cheers dude...

Since the last back up, only played Pro Evo and GT5. All films and other stuff are held on an external drive, so data loss hopefully should be relatively minimal.

Most of my recent GT5 usage has been buying & customising cars. Guess I will find out how many I lost once I get round to sorting it.

Had my PS3 4 1/2 years, no previous problems, original 60gb hard drive still works, so I can use that to get up and running for the time being. Needless to say I will be contacting Play.com about the 8 month old dead hard drive!  >:(

Bloody hell 8month old HDD gone up in smoke! Still under the 12 month guarantee so replacing it should be a doddle hopefully :)

I used to work with hardware, but every HDD, has at least 2 years factory waranty.

So, all drives over 1 year, contact the brand and get yourself a RMA (Return Material Authorisation) form.
Ship it and it will for sure be replaced!!

I am finally back in business!  ;D

Only got round to sorting it over the weekend and thanks to a local techno wizz I found, I didn't lose anything! Whilst he was at it, gave the old dog a service to minimise the threat of YLOD!  8)

Looks like I have some catching up to do though...
